BMW India sells 2,482 cars in Q1 of 2020 – Sales decline by 16%

BMW sells more cars in India than arch-rival Mercedes Benz in Q1 of 2020.

BMW with pride, have released the their Q1 sales figures, which are 2,482 units (BMW-2,365 + MINI-117), and this puts them over their competitor Mercedes Benz that has 2386 units sold.

BMW has managed to achieve this feat after 7 long years. It is interesting to know that 50% of their total sales as been achieved because of the cars in their SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) such as the X1, X3, X5 and the X7.

This is not all, as the sedans like the 3 series and 5 series also contributed to attaining this respectable number of sales. From the 117 cars sold by MINI, the MINI Hatch and MINI Countryman attributed to 60% of the total sales, and these numbers are quite good for a premium brand like MINI.

Bavarian Motors recently updated the X1 and priced this SAV at 35.90 lakhs (ex-showroom), and 2 months back they launched the 530i Sport variant with a sticker price of 55.40 lakhs (ex-showroom). Updates and new variants being launched keeps car models fresh and desirable, and this kind of dedication helped BMW achieve these sales numbers.

BMW might feel delight over beating Mercedes in sales, but when their Q1 sales from 2020 are compared against their numbers from Q1 2019, it is revealed that they have actually had a drop of 17.84% in sales, and this drop is caused due to Coronavirus.

Coronavirus continues to make life difficult for everyone, and BMW too has been affected by it. The president and CEO of BMW India, Rudratej Singh, agrees that Covid 19 has had dire effects on the public health, industry, economy and business within BMW and the dealerships have lost out on face to face conversations with customers.

However, BMW is dealing with this by introducing ways via which they would be able to fulfil the needs and requirements of the customers, from a distance. Furthermore, he also stated that BMW would be working on using digital interaction to maintain customer relationships.

Not only did BMW and MINI do well, but BMW Motorrad has also returned good sales between Jan to March this year. The motorcycle brand of BMW managed to sell 1,024 units of bikes, and from this number, 60% of the bikes sold were the 310R and 310GS and this is no surprise, as these 2 units have been tremendously desired by the Indian market.

BMW have praised their Financial Services, and they do deserve the praise as they have managed to return a good amount of sales in spite of the gloomy market conditions. Furthermore, BMW have also gone on to commend the ‘customised and flexible financial solutions’ of their company as they were able to cater to the needs of the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad clientele.

BMW would be hoping on continuing this form, and returning similar sales figures, but with the Covid 19 crisis looming over our world, one can not be completely certain about anything anymore, Stay safe readers!
