Tata moves to New generation of Electrification as Tiago EV marks end of Gen-1 EVs!
Tata will set the Tiago EV launch as the end of the first generation of its transition towards its electric future. The company called this the first phase of its three-step journey towards electrification.
Tata motors unveiled the Tiago EV a few days ago and that launch sets the end of the first generation of its transition towards its electric future. The company called this the first phase of its three-step journey towards electrification. Tata has decided to move forward with a generation change with its EV lineup and may introduce more brands under the next generation. This comes months after the mogul had unveiled its vision for the second generation EVs in the form of an electric SUV that they plan to call the Curvv EV. Four such products are currently in planning by Tata showing the swiftness with which the company plans to electrify. In an interview with Autocar, the Managing director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles division, Shailesh Chandra, revealed that the Tiago EV shall be the last product of the Gen-1 and now they will enter the Generation-2.
The First generation for the company primarily focussed on using all the plaforms that they currently have and fir the batteries with the minimum amount of money. Mr Chandra said that they intend to evolve with the electrification by starting at the low market size of converting the ICE cars into electric with high profits and low volumes. The Tiago EV uses this concept perfectly by adding a custom split-battery pack fitted into the fuel tank space and the boot floor. This hasn’t been the most effective method as it leaves no room to add the spare tyre.
In the second generation, they plan to add extreme modifications to the ICE architecture to create orthogonal spaces for a bigger battery pack, this could lead to characteristics like a flat floor. The Generation 3 unlike the first two will be built with the intention of making them electric from ground up.
He said that the Gen-2 products will be a combination of both EVs made from current nameplates and some new products and quoted the Curvv as an example. But he did not explain any second generation product. He also made it clear that there will be four Gen-2 products which further increases the likelihood of the Altroz, Punch, Sierra and the Curvv being the four EVs.
