2023 BMW 7 Series spied revealing major changes

The next phase in the ‘Battle of The Big Three’ began when Mercedes-Benz revealed its all-new S-Class, which, by the way, is seriously impressive and capable. Fair enough then, BMW and Audi, both have a target each. We know Ingolstadt is already developing a facelift version for its flagship sedan due later this year or early next year but, what is Munich doing? Well, looking at the spy shots, BMW is doing quite a lot to take the fight to the S-Class.

The maker has taken its under-development 7 Series prototype back to the home of prototypes, the Nürburgring, where the next-gen model is seen wearing the usual camo clothes from top to bottom. Apart from the windows and alloys, of course. Once you manage to take a closer look at the front fenders, you would see cameras in the small winglets. Those cameras are said to be for the blind spot monitoring system. They could even serve to be as a part of the potential Level 4 autonomous driving system, should BMW manage to get a green signal for the same.

Apart from those cameras, switch to the side profile and you can see the new door handles, originally used on the iX SUV first, with even a dual-screen setup borrowed again from the iX for the inside, and a current-gen iDrive infotainment unit. Considering the upcoming 7 Series will take it up a notch, this doesn’t come as a surprise that the flagship Bimmer will get all the updated and latest bells and whistles.

Talking about the front, again, the new headlights mirror those of the original 8 Series, with the pair of them being mounted low, and the renders too, confirm the same, sort of. And believe us, even if the headlights aren’t too similar to the 8 Series, the position at which they are placed on the prototypes, is final. And I thought BMW was never going to play around with its satisfying design language, at least on the 7 Series…

Oh, good news! The *pretty* big kidney grille used on the new-gen models, won’t be used on the next-gen 7 Series. To make it one better, the size of the grille used in the seventh-gen model will be smaller than that used on the current gen. Moving at the back, the taillights seem to be longer than what we can see in these shots. You even have a spoiler, probably a boot lip spoiler, as well as a quad-tip exhaust.

So far, we could manage only this much information on the upcoming generation of the 7 Series. As for its powertrain, we know that BMW is dropping its sensationally smooth V12, and most likely will also do away with its V8 motor because, emissions. The power should then come from a 6-cyl unit, coupled with a couple of turbochargers and an electric motor.

It doesn’t stop here, as the most powerful version of the 2023 7 Series will be an all-electric model, named the “i7”, which will be the company’s answer to the Mercedes-Benz EQS. According to Japan’s Spyder7, a publication, the three variants of the i7 to go on sale will be the i740i, i750i, and i7 M60. The top-spec M60 variant will produce the most power, somewhere near the 650hp mark, from its twin electric motors. The standard 7 Series model will be offered in 735d, 740i, 745e, and M750e trims.
