Hyundai reveals next-generation i20 sketch ahead of global debut

The Korean automaker, Hyundai, has revealed the sketch for the next generation i20. This model is set for global revelation at the Geneva Motor Show, 2020. The model has already hit the Indian streets and certain international streets for road tests. The next-generation i20 will be launched with a series of style updates, new options for the engine, and of course advanced features.

i20 has always been a model that was considered to be of exceptional looks within its segment. Now that being said, the latest model will be launched with a much more sportier exterior. However, the hatchback continues to use the core design and silhouette of the previous generation models. Since the reveal of the sketch, it has been observed that a few elements of the new model have similarities with other models of Hyundai. For example, the bumper of the model is much more vibrant which is similar to the recently revealed Aura sedan. Another example is the fact that the headlights merging with the cascading grille is a design language which was first introduced in Elantra.

Before we explore the exterior sketch of the model, let’s have a look at the engine options. There are three engine options available for this model:

  1. 1.2 liter BS6 compliant petrol engine which provides a maximum power of 83bhp along with 114Nm of torque.
  2. 1.0-liter turbo petrol engine which has previously been used in Venue and can provide a maximum power of 120 PS.
  3. 1.5 liter BS6 compliant diesel engine which is capable of providing a power of 90bhp. This version of the engine is a de-tuned version of the one currently being used in Kia Seltos.

The exterior of the model has been selectively upgraded. A minimalist approach was taken with the upgrades. Therefore, the brand made sure the model looked sportier with a few tweaks here and there and have avoided any major makeovers. Considering the i20 is one of the best selling model’s in the company’s portfolio, it is justified why Hyundai did not want to change the exterior or the dimensions majorly.

The model will be launched with premium features for the interior. Firstly, there’s an 8-inch touchscreen for the infotainment systems along with a completely digital instrument cluster that seems to have gained inspiration from the unit installed in the New Creta. Other features include wireless charging, push start/stop button, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, and front and rear arm sets. Furthermore, the steering wheel comes with multi-function (a new addition for the new model!).

But, this isn’t all. There will be technology related upgrades as well. The hatchback will be equipped with Hyundai’s advanced BlueLink connectivity. This technology can be used by customers to get access to a series of smart features such as automatic crash notification, real-time monitoring of the vehicle, health reports, vehicle immobilizer, and remote start/stop/lock/unlock.

This new model will be replacing the i20 Elite in India. Considering the price of the Elite ranges between ₹5.59 lakhs to ₹9.41 lakhs, the new model will be launched with a hiked price. The price hike can be justified with the internal features and the sportier exterior. So,all in all, it shall cost from around ₹6 lakh to ₹9.85 lakh.

It is expected that the new i20 will be launched for Indian Market consumption in June 2020. The rivals for this model include Honda Jazz, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Tata Altroz, and Ford Freestyle.
