Acura offers a sneak peek at the 2022 Acura NSX Type S

The high-performance version of the NSX will make its official debut at the Monterey Car Week later this month.

The hardcore version of perhaps one of the best high-performance hybrid supercars ever made was teased several times over the past few weeks, with some even thinking that Honda, or Acura if you live outside the States, would go all in and name it the Acura NSX Type R. Well, I am here to tell you that nothing of that sort is happening. However, a Type S on the other hand… why not!

Sir James May thinks the Honda/Acura NSX is a better choice at around $200,000 (with options) when compared with the million-dollar offerings from Ferrari, McLaren, and Porsche. What does its better version in the form of the Type S offers, let’s find out!

First off, the Type S, according to Honda/Acura, “raises the already impressive performance of Acura’s cutting-edge electrified supercar to new levels.” Put simply – you have redesigned front and rear bumpers, new wheels, darker exterior trims, and a Type S logo on the rear quarter panel.

Since the teaser shots reveal the back end the most, we also now know that the NSX Type S will also be home to more angular air intakes and a much larger diffuser. As for the interior, expect plenty of carbon fiber and sportier seats, maybe.

Speaking of expectations, while the Type S will continue to use the ‘regular’ NSX’s 3.5L, twin-turbo V6, and a Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system, do expect it to boast well over 600hp as opposed to the 573hp offered currently.

“NSX has played a critical role in reestablishing Acura as a performance brand and the return of Type S,” said Emile Korkor, Assistant Vice President, Acura National Sales. “We’ve seen tremendous enthusiasm in the market and we aren’t done yet; there’s more to come as Type S becomes the pinnacle expression of performance across the Acura lineup.”

Only 350 units of this already-rare supercar will ever be made, with 300 of those scheduled to make people in the States happy, as Japan gets 20 units and the rest of the world will have a potential chance to get their hands on the remaining 30 units. During the official global reveal, taking place on August 12, Acura will reveal the official info on performance and pricing, so stay tuned!

Oh, and one more thing – this Acura NSX Type S will mark the end of the current-gen NSX altogether. A bittersweet moment.
