The new Maserati MC20 Cielo – Same formula, better views!

Maserati have finally unveiled the convertible version of their MC20 supercar which was launched almost 2 years ago. This is the convertible Maserati had promised and boy does it look good. If this is how hot it looks in a baby blue colour then I really do believe blue is the warmest colour! Called the MC20 Cielo, this is Maserati’s convertible MC20 with mostly the same guts but definitely better views.

As I said, this one uses the same Nettuno V6 that powers the MC20 coupe. A 3.0-liter “motor” makes the same 621 HP (456 kilowatts) and 730 NM of torque. The engine is paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic with a top speed close to or above 198 miles per hour i.e. 320 Kph.

Coming over to what did change, this is an open top. Maserati has three variants of the carbon-fibre monocoque chassis – one for the coupe, one for an EV and one for a convertible. The differences between them is a very clever mix of layering of carbon fibre to balance out the weight and performance depending on the variation. With the MC20 Cielo, focus is on rigidity and you’d be delighted to know the convertible weighs just about 65 kilos more than the coupe. That is incredible.

The retractable roof can open and close in 12 seconds features a large chromatic glass panel that can instantly turn from transparent to opaque, all thanks to its polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) technology. Maserati claims that this is the largest glass panel in the segment. You might recall seeing something like this in McLaren vehicles but this one is an even bigger glass panel.

There is a limited run of 60 units for the PrimaSerie Launch Edition. What’s extra you ask? Well, the same old trick of offering things you can get for a fifth of the price but hey, Maserati needs the brand name and mark ups. This limited-run version will have unique, exclusive touches, like the new Acquamarina exterior paint colour. On the inside, customers will get ice-coloured Alcantara and leather, with aquamarine contrast stitching on the dash. Maserati also uses the colour for the “PrimaSerie” wording on the headrests. That “PrimaSerie” wording extends to the matte-black 20-inch wheels.

Overall, the new MC20 Cielo is definitely not a lot different from the coupe but, it definitely adds the flare of a Maserati. This one gives me the same vibes as an Audi R8 from back in the days. It might not have been the fastest on a drag strip or on a track but, it was very very cool. Isn’t that the purpose of a supercar. Not everyone will buy it to drive it on the track or race it on the drag strip for YouTube. Some people just want to enjoy the supercar and the purpose behind such a car from such an Italian brand is also to make it as enjoyable as possible.
