It is no surprise China is the favourite sedan market for automakers, thanks to its high demand for sedans in the times of SUVs and CUVs. Going with their motto “Made in China, for China”, Mercedes-Benz presented the long-wheelbase version of the new C-Class at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Expo.
The new C-Class has a length of 4,882mm which makes it around 131mm longer than the standard model. It also has an 89mm longer wheelbase than the standard W206 C-class. Sometimes it is hard to understand Merc’s marketing strategy. Just like the E-class L was a better VFM than an S-class, this C class L will probably be preferred over the standard E-class. Mercedes competing within themselves.
The new sedan gets a stylish L badge on the C pillar which gives it a distinguished look apart from the elongated length. The rest of the exterior design elements on the C-Class L are similar to the standard with the same sportier grille pattern.
The German automaker claims the stretched sedan comes with more legroom (obviously) and a more feature-rich cabin. The back seats get an updated seat design with luxury head restraints, a wider armrest with built-in cupholders and dedicated USB ports. However, the front seats and the dashboard layout seem to be carried over from the standard car. Mercedes is also offering some China-specific features in the C-Class L which include a softer suspension and enhanced noise insulation material which the automaker claims will provide an even quieter interior.
Talking about engine & transmission, Mercedes will launch the C 200L with a 168hp 1.5-litre petrol engine and the more expensive C 260 L will come with a 201hp version coupled with mild-hybrid tech. Both these engine models are for the Chinese variants of the sedan and they will be paired to a 9-speed automatic gearbox.
Alongside the C-Class L, the new CLS also celebrated its global debut during the 2021 Shanghai Auto Expo. The four-door coupé now comes with an even more sharpened and strong design. The interior has also been upgraded with additional leather and trim combinations. The coupe from the German stable now gets a new-generation steering wheel. Mercedes also informed that a latest-generation diesel with an integrated starter-generator has been added to the model range.
Besides this new standard variant, there will be a sporty and exclusive special edition, the Mercedes‑AMG CLS 53 4MATIC+. However, this top-tier model will be limited to just 300 units.
