After launching a long list of cars at the global platform of the 2021 Shanghai Auto Expo, Mercedes launched a more luxurious alteration of its S Class under the Maybach wing. The Daimler group launched the pictures of the Mercedes Maybach S680 ultra-luxury sedan very secretively a few days back. But why so secretive? Uploaded by mistake maybe?
Anyways, the top-of-the-line luxury sedan is not less than any gift for the (uber-rich) petrol-heads. Two years ago, news circulated that the V12 will no longer be offered by Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG models. However, Daimer CEO Ola Kallenius was quick to dismiss the claims saying that the power unit will still be offered by the 2021 S-Class.
And now it appears that the company’s chief has kept his word on the matter as the new S680 packs in a powerful 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 engine. It will be mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission and rumored to have a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system as standard. Well if it’s true, the luxury sedan will be the first V12 Mercedes-Benz passenger car to have it.
Mercedes is yet to disclose the official figures on the new S 680. The power unit is expected to be an updated version of the same engine on the previous S 650 model which produces 630 BHP and 1000 Nm. And one can safely expect a boost in the power delivery with a smoother experience.
In terms of design, the new Maybach sedan doesn’t look that different from other S Class offerings. The 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S 680 carries forward the signature premium dual-tone finish of the Designo Rubellite Red and Kalahari Gold paint scheme. The sedan is flaunting a heavy dose of chrome all around, even on the 21-inch large multi-spoke alloy wheels which are complementing its overall look.
Even on the inside, the new Mercedes-Maybach S680 has a matching interior with the rest of the S Class offerings. The cabin has an arrangement of five screens, of which one is a 12.3-inch driver display and the other one is a massive 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen of the infotainment unit.
There are tons of features loaded on the sedan, which is expected of a Maybach series car. These include electric powered doors and sunshades, a panoramic glass sunroof, plush upholstery and pillows. The dashboard has the unique futuristic-looking Mercedes touchscreen infotainment system that actually curves out of the central ridge running between the whole cabin. Overall, the interior looks wrapped up in plush materials top to bottom, giving a premium feel. We expect the German automaker to officially release a list of all features in the coming weeks.
Mercedes is bringing the standard model to India later this year, so it is likely the new luxurious Maybach S Class will follow it in the future. But let’s wait for an official statement before you get all hyped up!
