Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder trademarked! Could rival Hyundai Creta

The brand has two upcoming launches this year, with an MPV jointly developed with Maruti and possibly a Creta rivalling midsize SUV as well.

Toyota has trademarked two names in India, namely the Toyota Hyryder and the Toyota Hycross. The Hyryder is likely to be the name of the upcoming Creta-rivalling SUV, while the Hycross could well be the new Innova, both of which are touted to be launched later this year in the country. Along with the Hyryder name, Toyota have also trademarked the Urban Cruiser Hyryder name as well.

The Hycross could well be the next-gen Innova, and it is touted to be reaching the market by sometime in September-October. Reports suggest that the Hycross could have a monocoque architecture as opposed to the ladder frame architecture of the current-gen model. Also just like the new Scorpio, it’s possible that the current-gen Innova Crysta will be sold alongside this new model.

As for the Hyryder, the car has been in development for a while now, and is widely touted to be a mid-size SUV which will compete with the current and seemingly perennial market leader, the Hyundai Creta. It is also said to be built on the new DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) model, and will take on the Taigun, Seltos and of course the Creta as well once it reaches the Indian market.

The “Hy” prefix before the names could well also be hinting towards the cars being hybrid by nature, having features like regenerative braking, electric-only range and more. How Toyota implements this will be interesting, though it’s likely that the Hyryder will just be a cousin car of the upcoming Maruti Brezza which was recently spied while it was being recorded for a TVC. With both the Urban Cruiser and Innova Crysta now beginning to show their age, there is no better time for Toyota to capture the interest of the Indian market.
