Volkswagen has launched the new and updated 2022 version of its best-selling global car, the Tiguan (yeah, I know this itself is news for many of you!) It will be offered in four trim levels including value-oriented S, high-volume SE, stylish SE R-Line Black and top-shelf SEL R-Line. This is the first facelift of the updated SUV since its launch in 2017 and now comes with a refreshed new styling and technology. Okay, the visuals haven’t changed much and you may not notice the updates in the pictures, so let me point them out for you, one by one!
With its timeless German design, the current Tiguan is already a head-turner and why fix something that’s not broken? In its new updated avatar, the 2022 Tiguan looks even more elegant and sophisticated. The new SUV now gets new bumpers at both front and rear. There’s a reworked grille on the nose which is complemented by LED headlights and daytime running lights (DRLs), both of which are now standard equipment. The whole front facia is accented further by an optional illuminated light bar flanking the VW logo.
The top two trims now also come with updated sporty R-Line design elements on the bumpers and side sills. The new Tiguan retains its distinctive side profile with its strong character line stretching from the front fender through to the LED taillights which again are now standard equipment.
Other changes around the back now see the Tiguan badge relocated underneath the VW logo. The whole frame sits on a set of new aluminum-alloy wheels spanning between 17 and 20 inch rims. The 2022 Tiguan will be available in eight exterior colors including two fresh shades joining the palette – Oryx White and Kings Red Metallic.
Given the Tiguan’s minor exterior changes, it should be no surprise there aren’t really any mechanical enhancements. The new SUV is powered by a familiar 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine. It churns out the same 184hp and 300Nm of torque it does today.
However, VW claims this engine has been retuned to deliver smoother acceleration and better highway performance. The power unit is mated with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2022 Tiguan now comes with a front- or all-wheel drive on all four trim levels.
Coming over to the inside, the story is very similar to the outside. There are some new colors on offer including Cinnamon leatherette and a rich brown cowhide called Noisette which jazzes up the interiors. But, no visible change in the layout and the design which is not a bad thing.
Features like heated seats and heated steering wheel are now standard across all trims. Talking about the steering wheel, the German automaker has switched to touch-sensitive buttons on the wheel and for the climate controls with strong haptic feedback. (Let’s just hope, the drivers won’t end up unintentionally clicking them while driving).
The R-Line models also get a leather-wrapped steering wheel beside the touch islands and sliders. The top-shelf SEL R-Line model even features ventilated front chairs for extra comfort. Based on customer demand, all front-drive (FWD) Tiguans come with a third-row seat, but all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions only have two rows of accommodations.
Overall the refreshed cabin looks nice and feels upscale. On the dashboard, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster comes as standard, however, R-Line Tiguans have a bigger 10.3-inch display fitted inside. The cabin features Volkswagen Car-Net with in-car subscription-based Wi-Fi capability. And from the second trim in the revised lineup, MIB3 infotainment is also standard along with wireless charging and wireless App-Connect for compatible devices. German cars and safety go hand in hand. Automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring are standard throughout the range and cost no premium. Volkswagen’s has also included the IQ Drive suite of aids as standard on all versions except the base model, where it’s optional. The suite includes features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-keep assist, among other things. Other available driver assistance technologies include high beam light assist, parking steering assistant and dynamic road sign recognition.
The new Tiguan is scheduled to go on sale around the third quarter of 2021 in the U.S. Volkswagen has not yet disclosed the pricing but on launch, it will compete against the likes of Chevy Equinox, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota RAV4.
