Tata launches the Tiago EV – Starts at ₹8.49 lakhs

India's first EV hatchback is here and it offers 315 Kms of range making it the most affordable EV offering in the country.

Tata Motors are not slowing down their EV charge in India (pun intended) and it only means good things. They have finally launched the hotly anticipated Tata Tiago EV at a starting price of ₹8.49 lakhs making it India’s most affordable EV and India’s first EV hatchback. Having a whopping 89% market share and selling a humongous 45,000 EVs on the road, Tata Motors have taken a huge competitive advantage by being the first movers and investing in the right technology at the right time. Coming over to the latest addition, here’s all you need to know about the Tiago EV:

Powertrain

Tiago.ev is based on the Ziptron technology just as the Nexon EV and the Tigor EV. For the uninita=iated, Ziptron EV technology is Tata’s in-house developed high voltage architecture designed for unique Indian driving and weather conditions that they use in all of their EV models and will continue to in the future as well. The Tiago EV is offered in multiple combinations of IP67 rated (water and dust resistant) battery packs and charging options including a 24kWh battery pack which will deliver an MIDC (Modified Indian Driving Cycle) range of 315kms for longer daily driving needs. It also comes with a 19.2kWh battery pack for short and frequent trips, delivering an estimated MIDC range of 250kms.The battery and motor also comes with 8 years or 160,000 kms warranty while the production of the 24kWh battery pack variants have been prioritized based on insights to match customer expectations at the time of delivery.

What is even more impressive is the practicality of charging it comes with. The Tiago EV comes with 4 different charging solutions:

  • A 15A plug point for hassle free – anywhere anytime- charging
  • A standard 3.3kW AC charger
  • A 7.2kW AC home fast charger which can add 35kms range with just 30min of charging. It also aids full charging of the vehicle (from 10% – 100%) in 3 hr 36 mins
  • DC fast charging which can add 110kms of range with just 30mins of charging and can charge 10%- 80% in just 57 mins

Design and features

On the outside, there is no visible change apart from the fresh new shades and a shade of blue accent in all of the EV variants. The Tiago EV is a small hatchback but comes loaded with features and tech from a class above. Features like leatherette seats, contrast roof, fully automatic climate control are standard along with projector headlamps and cruise control. The Tiago EV also offers its customers with rain-sensing wipers, auto head lamps, electric ORVMs with auto fold, push button start / stop along with a puncture repair kit to be used during emergencies. The puncture repair kit is basically mandated due to the lack of a spare wheel since the battery packs do not leave any space for a spare wheel.

The Tiago EV also comes with a host of connected car features which have been briefed by Tata Motors themselves. These include first-in-class telematics as standard on all trims. The ZConnect app will offer 45 connected car features which include Remote AC ON/OFF with temperature setting, Remote geo fencing & car location tracking, Smart watch connectivity, Remote vehicle health diagnostics, Real-time charge status, Dynamic charger locator, Driving Style analytics amongst others. In addition to the above, customers will also enjoy an 8-speaker Harman Infotainment System with Android Auto and Apple Car Play connectivity.

On the safety front, the Tiago EV, just like its ICE counterpart, is a GNCAP 4-star rated vehicle. Couple that with the very generous 315 Kms of MIDC range, it becomes a compelling highway option at much cheaper cost owing to current fuel prices. The total power is 55kW and an instant torque of 114 Nm propelling it from 0-60 in an astounding 5.7 seconds. For context, the 2020 Bentley Bentayga plug-in-hybrid did 0-100 Kph in 5.3 seconds.

Variants and pricing

Tata Motors have very aggressively priced the Tiago EV but this introductory price structure is only for the first 10,000 customers out of whom, the first 2000 bookings are reserved for current Tigor EV and Nexon EV owners. Bookings will begin from October 10 at an amount of ₹21,000. Here’s variant wise price list.
