The Hyundai i20 has been one of the most popular premium hatchbacks to be sold in India for a while now, and for good reason. It is arguably one of the most feature-rich hatchbacks on sale today in the country. However, the current generation of the i20 has been on sale in the Indian market since 2014, so it is definitely due for an update. Thankfully, the new 2020 i20’s India launch is just around the corner, and new interior spy images (via Autocar India) reveal a step up in features in a bid to remain relevant to Indian consumers.
The interior layout of the India bound car is the same as the international version, including a dual-tone colour scheme, combining black with coffee brown accents for certain trim elements, leatherette seats and contrast stitching.
In the middle sits a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, complemented by a digital instrument display which seems to be taken straight out of the Verna facelift. There are some physical switches and buttons for certain functions mounted below the centre screen, and there also seems to be wireless smartphone charging.
The 2020 Hyundai i20’s four-spoke steering-wheel seems to be the one also seen inside the second-gen Hyundai Creta. the new i20’s visible features in the spy shots also include cruise control, a front centre armrest, a Bose sound system, a centre armrest for the rear seat passengers and an air purifier placed between the front seats.
The range-topping Asta variant will feature a sunroof, Hyundai’s BlueLink connected-car technology can be expected as well.
While the interior spied comes from a fully loaded Asta Automatic, the spy shots also reveal a manual Asta variant, which retains the Bose audio system and 10.25-inch touchscreen, but misses out on cruise control, the sunroof and also has fixed headrests for the rear-seat passengers.
The new i20 Asta automatic also wears the DCT badge, which confirms the presence of the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that is also seen in a number of other Hyundai India models. Power will come from a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, expected to put out close to 120hp, which could be offered with both a Manual and a DCT. Entry-level variants will probably come with a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol paired with a 5-speed manual. A 1.5-litre 100hp diesel engine option is also expected. It remains to be seen if Hyundai will also offer its intelligent manual transmission (iMT) option on the new i20, If it does, however, it’ll most likely stand as the third gearbox option for the 1.0 turbo-petrol.
The new 2020 Hyundai i20 will go up against the Maruti-Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza, Honda Jazz and the Tata Altroz. Expected price ranges from ₹5.5 lakh to ₹9.5 lakh (ex-showroom).
