There’s a new Jaguar in the town (no you don’t have to call the forest department or the animal rescue). Tata owned British luxury vehicle manufacturer Jaguar launched its long-awaited car, I-PACE, in India. Priced at around Rs. 1.06 crore, I-PACE is the first all-electric offering in the Indian market from the wild cat’s den and will directly compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz EQC and the upcoming Audi e-Tron and Porsche Taycan. All the 3 variants of the electric SUV – S, SE and HSE will be imported to the Indian market as CBUs (Completely Built-Up Units).
Much celebrated in the international market for its capabilities, this electric SUV is powered by a 90 kWh battery with a power output of 294 kW and 696 Nm torque. As a result, the I-PACE takes just 4.8 secs to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (No wonder people mistake Jaguars with cheetahs).
The vehicle can reach up to a top speed of 200 km/h and has a range of 480 km on full charge (This figure is by WLTP though and it is yet to get an ARAI confirmation). Jaguar is offering a Home Charging Cable as standard along with a 7.4 kW AC wall-mounted charger to the I-Pace customers. The installation of this charger will be done by Tata Power Ltd and will take around 14 hours to charge the vehicle.
Having Tata as a parent company, the I-PACE is also going to enjoy an access to around 200 charging stations in 23 cities across the country. It’ll take the I-PACE around 45 minutes of fast-charging on one of these stations to juice up an empty battery to 80 percent with a 50 kW DC fast-charger. Mercedes-Benz via their recent social media has also offered the I-Pace owners to charge their cars at any of their 100+ charging stations. The EV charging stations will definitely see a rapid increase in the coming future due to the central government’s new Vehicle Scarping Policy which will give a push to the EV sector to a bright future. Also, every Jaguar I-PACE model comes with a complimentary 5 years service package with roadside assistance and an 8 years or 1,60,000 km battery warranty.
Taking about electricity and a bright future, the I-PACE’s interior is futuristic, to say the least. The feature-loaded 12.3-inch HD instrument cluster comes with a head-up display and adaptive cruise control. Equipped with the latest Pivi Pro infotainment system, the vehicle gets one screen for the basic infotainment and the other for climate control with a connected car tech as well. The smart climate control can adjust temperature up to four independent zones. The 10-inch centrally mounted infotainment touchscreen comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay which is complimented with a 16-speaker setup of Meridian 3D surround sound system, wireless charging, and a PM2.5 air filter. The I-PACE also comes equipped with an automatic Software over the Air (SOTA) functionality which will allow remote update of systems like infotainment, battery management and charging.
The I-PACE definitely took sharp and aggressive design cues from its siblings F-Pace, XE and the XF. It gets twin-pod LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs. I-Pace comes with cool features like torque vectoring by braking, low traction launch, dynamic mode, all surface progress control, active suspension along with adaptive dynamics system and electronic air suspension. After activating the dynamic mode, the instrument cluster and the cabin lighting turns red. The SUV comes with 22-inch alloy wheels and also gets a massive panoramic sunroof which enhances the overall look of the vehicle. It’ll be available in 12 colour options.
You can’t talk about a Tata (or a Tata owned) product without mentioning the safety aspects of the vehicle, right? On the safety front, the I-Pace gets six airbags, ABS, ESC, motor drag torque control, rollback protection, roll stability control, emergency brake assist, front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera as standard on all models.
Being the most expensive electric vehicle in India right now, the vehicle does tick on most of the things and will attract a class of performance and luxury-oriented customers, who don’t want to leave a carbon footprint. “Jaguar I-PACE is the first all-electric SUV that we’ve launched in India and it marks the beginning of our electrification journey. With our electrified products we look forward to playing a significant role in India’s electrification drive into the future. Jaguar I-PACE will appeal to people who look for and purchase the latest in technology and design, to express their personalities and stay ahead of the curve. We and our Retailer network are fully prepared to cater to the demands of these customers.” said Rohit Suri, President & Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover India Ltd. (JLRIL) during the I-PACE launch event.
