2021 Mercedes GLA about to hit the Indian shores! – Engine specs are out.

Mercedes is about to rain cars in 2021.

Mercedes-Benz is all set to launch the second generation GLA in India. It was expected to launch in India last year though its launch was pushed back to 2021 (thanks to the coronavirus).

The small luxury SUV from Merc was first showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. It shares the same body structure and design language of the recently launched A-class Limousine.

The German carmakers will offer the new GLA with a petrol and diesel engine option which are expected to be followed by an AMG variant at a later date. The next-gen SUV will come in three trims – a regular 220d along with AMG Line and Progressive Line trims. The regular 220d will be a front-wheel-drive only and available in Merc’s Progressive line trim while the other 220d, gets a 190hp diesel engine and 4Matic all-wheel drive and will only be available in the AMG Line trim.

The engine is the same OM654q (OM stands for Oil Motor or diesel and q is for its transverse placement) seen on other Mercedes products in India. It comes with a variable-geometry turbo, 2,050 bar of injection pressure, a forged crankshaft and steel pistons.

There is a petrol in the range too. The GLA 200 actually uses a derivative of the 1,332cc Renault-Nissan direct-injection turbo-petrol developing 163hp and 250Nm of torque and is shared with the A-Class sedan. Also on the cards for India is the performance-oriented Mercedes-AMG GLA 35.

The second-gen GLA will go up against the BMW X1, Mini Countryman, Volvo XC40, and the upcoming gen of the Audi Q3.

Mercedes has lined up a long list of launches for 2021, 15 in total to be precise. This includes the much awaited models like the new Mercedes S-Class and the Mercedes AMG GT Black Series.
