Here’s the MG6 XPower from the family car maker Morris Garages!

The only unimpressive thing about this mean looking sports coupe is its name. But hey! As BIG WILL said, what's in a name?

MG has unveiled the first production car under its XPower sports brand, the MG6 XPower. Based on the British automaker’s second-generation MG6 compact sedan, the XPower pays tribute to the brand’s racing heritage.

In terms of design, the MG6 XPower looks like one angry-looking car (Must be the name, I suppose). The four-door sports coupe looks like it’s out to destroy anything in its path. Thanks to the ultra-wide body design, and lower, more hunkered-down stance. The redesigned body now has an upgraded aero package with a massive carbon fibre rear spoiler.

On the front, there’s a prominent hexagonal radiator grille on the nose with vertical slats and MG logo. The grille is flanked by LED headlamps with LED DRL. The sculpted bumper with large air intakes, and a carbon fibre front splitter adds to the aggressive facia. The sides have a clean profile with a prominent character line running across the length of the vehicle. The coupe-type roofline also meets the boot seamlessly.

The rear feature exclusive ‘X’shape taillights, carbon fibre rear spoiler and double pneumatic diffusers. The whole structure sits on sporty alloy wheels enhancing the overall aesthetics of the vehicle. Coming to the inside, the cabin looks identical to the standard car but now flaunts a whole lot of Alcantara surface with green contrast stitching and grey highlights. There are XPower logos on the sports seats, centre armrest, and door sills. Each car also gets a unique limited-edition number.

MG informs that it will offer a bunch of customisation options for the interior, when the car is ready for sale. The standard set of features include a fully digital TFT instrument cluster, a large touchscreen infotainment system, multiple driving modes, automatic AC, and more.

Powering this mean looking machine is a high-performance plug-in hybrid system. It includes a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine and a high-power permanent magnet synchronous motor. But… I know you’re interested in what it churns out! Well the power unit delivers 301 bhp of max power and a peak torque of 480 Nm. The MG6 XPower has the capability to do a 0-100 kmph sprint within 6 seconds. MG claims the finely calibrated chassis suspension results in superb handling. .

The sportscar gets a 10-speed EDU second-generation intelligent electric drive gearbox, allowing the motor and the engine power to be seamlessly connected with faster shift response and higher transmission efficiency. The MG6 XPower gets specially developed racing-grade 920E 6-piston fixed callipers at the front and rear along with a floating disc. The claimed stopping power from 100 kmph to 0 is within a space of 33 metres. But it’ll be unjust if we give all the credits to the brakes without mentioning the Michelin Pilot Sport CUP2 high-performance tyres.

MG Motor has not mentioned the production or sale schedule yet, but expect it to hit the roads sometime in 2022. With all the crazy specs, the MG6 XPower seems to be the beginning of a new journey of the Chinese owned auto brand. A journey to trace back its racing roots! The British company also revealed a two-seater Cyberster concept earlier this year and will take it into the production stage by 2023. Meanwhile, we’re all impressed with this angry green beauty, and the only thing we don’t like about is its name, but as BIG WILL said, “What’s in a name?“.

Will it come to Indian shores? We don’t know, yet. But what we do know is that MG is working on updating its range of vehicles in the market and a new entry-level SUV along with a smaller EV is also on the cards.
