Land Rover Defender 130 officially unveiled! 8-seater LandRover for family safaries

The 130 will be the largest offering for the Defender family, and is on sale now.

Land Rover have unveiled the Defender 130, which is the largest Defender currently on sale. It is positioned above the already on sale Defender 90 and Defender 110, and despite the similarities like the shared wheelbase with the 110, the 130 is well and truly a step above.

First and foremost is the oomph. The 130 gives prospective buyers a choice between 4 mild-hybrid powertrains, which include two petrol engines and two diesel engines. The petrol engines are called P300 and P400, and are both 3.0L six-cylinder engines with a power output of 295HP/470NM and 395HP/550NM respectively. As for the diesel powetrains, they are called the D250 and D300, and have a power output of 245HP/600NM and 295HP/650NM respectively. 0-100 takes between 6.6 seconds on the P400 to 8.9 seconds on the D250. All come mated to Land Rover’s 8-speed ZF gearbox as standard.

The offroad capabilities are vast, with an iAWD (Intelligent All-Wheel Drive) system as standard, which manages the powertrain and power distribution between the front and rear axles and in turn helps best suit the car as per the terrain. There is also electronic air suspension, and Terrain Response, which help on offroad surfaces and when water wading needs to be done. Towing capabilities of up to 3,000 KG is available on the 130 as well, which is useful the next time you would need to lug your master bedroom around on a roadtrip!

Where the 130 really shines is the interior. With the larger size, the last and middle row passengers get ample space to stretch their legs, and creature comforts like optional 4-zone climate control, heated seats, padded armrests and USB charging ports on the last row ensure that the occupants don’t feel cramped or lacking any luxuries. Each row has large airy windows, and a panoramic sunroof comes as standard. The seats are arranged in a manner called as “stadium”, wherein the middle and rear seats are pretty much on the same level to increase visibility. Land Rover even says that getting in and out of the third row is a breeze thanks to movable seats in the second row which can move ahead to allow for easy entry and exit to the third row.

The tech onboard and the interior finish is also decked out. Natural Light Oak engineered wood veneer is prevalent on the interior and dashboard, and the perforated Windsor leather seating is complemented by it. A large 11.4″ Pivi Pro touchscreen is seen on the dashboard, the same system seen on the Defender 90 and 110’s V8 versions. New what3words GPS navigation system is also onboard, which lets customers navigate anywhere in the world, and even find offroad paths to explore or find a parking space!

Despite all this, the 130 retains the same look as the 90 and 110 sibling cars. The new Extended Bright Pack is also available which gives the front of the car a new and fresh look. 20″ alloys, Meridian Sound System, Matrix LED lamps, privacy glass and exterior touches like a hard-shell spare wheel cover, roof rails, and new bumpers and skid plates make the car a real looker. Prices start from £73,895 on-road in the UK, and we can likely expect an India launch in the future given how the 90 and 110 retail in the country.
