Hyundai Creta takes top spot in sales for the month of May, Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga on 2nd

After garnering nearly 0 sales in the month of April, May has proved to be better for automakers with a small increase in the amount of sales

The Indian Auto Industry has been left reeling due to the lockdown, which was implemented to curb the spread of Covid 19. However, May onwards, the Government began to relax the lockdown, and this allowed industries to function. Even during morose times likes, it seems like Hyundai has something to celebrate, as for the first time in the India, Hyundai has managed to achieve the laurel of highest selling vehicle in a month.

The vehicle which made this possible for Hyundai was the 2020 Creta. Here are the top 5 selling vehicles from the month of May:

From the 6,883 vehicles sold by Hyundai in the month of May, the Creta accounted for 3,212 sales, and by doing so, it inched forward of all vehicles from the Indian Auto Industry and became the highest selling vehicle in the month of May. By doing so, it also became the first SUV to top the sales in a month. At 3,212 the Creta is the sales topper, its sales rivals like the Kia Seltos sold 1,611 vehicles, the MG Hector made 672 sales and the Tata Harrier managed to sell only 161 units. Quite clearly, the Creta is quite far ahead in comparison to its competition, and Hyundai would be quite proud of this achievement. While the first position was taken by the Korean automaker Hyundai, the second position was held by Maruti (quite expected), the largest automaker of India. It would surely sting Maruti to have lost to Hyundai in this regard. Surprisingly, the Maruti vehicle which is second on the chart of highest sales in the month of May is, the MPV Ertiga. In the past Maruti has managed to outsell all brands due to its budget vehicles which have budget prices, but in a twist, the Ertiga has sold more vehicles than all other affordable models of Maruti. The Ertiga sold 2,353 units, while its closest rival, the Renault Triber moved only 931 units.

On the third position, is yet again another Maruti vehicle, more specifically, it is the Dzire, which has often been responsible for accumulating a large percentage of sales for Maruti. It was quite recently given a facelift which surely made it more desirable (pun intended) in the market. A new engine is also offered in the Dzire, a 1.2 litre petrol engine which makes 90 ps. Vehicles like the Tata Tiago (857 units sold) and Ford Aspire (44 sales) could not match up to the Dzire in terms of sales this month.

The fourth position has been occupied by Mahindra’s Bolero, which sold 1,715 units in the month of May. In March, Mahindra released the BS6 compliant Bolero, and this Bolero received a minor facelift as well. The Bolero was the highest selling vehicle from Mahindra’s stable, and it accounted for 55.65 % of the total sales made by Mahindra in May.

And on the fifth position is a Maruti, surprise surprise, but it is not one of the affordable hatchbacks, in fact it is the Maruti Eeco. The Eeco which became BS6 compliant in January 2020, received 1,617 sales in May. This vehicle is a strict no-nonsense car, which is easy and cheap to maintain and also extremely reliable. Thanks to skills like these, the Eeco attained the fifth rank on the chart of highest selling vehicles in May 2020.

The numbers are encouraging for the auto industry, considering they saw nearly 0 sales in the month of April due to nationwide-lockdown.
