Jaguar Land Rover’s seat of the future

[dropcap]E[/dropcap]ver had the issue of adjusting the seat of your car to that “Oh so perfect!” setting? Well, you’re not alone. Because of the varied body structures that we humans have, it is not exactly possible to make a seat that is “one size fits all”. Or is it?

Well, JLR’s Body Interiors Research division is currently putting a “morphable” seat to trial. They are working on a seat that shape shifts and adjusts itself to fit each customer. It is a pioneering shape-shifting system designed to improve customer well being by tackling the health risks of sitting down for too long.

The seat uses a series of actuators inside the foam to create constant micro adjustments that make your brain think you’re walking. Thus, it can be individually tailored to each driver and passenger. By simulating the rhythm of walking, scientifically called pelvic oscillation, the technology can help mitigate against the health risks of sitting down for too long on extended journeys.

Dr Steve Iley, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Medical Officer, said: “The wellbeing of our customers
and employees is at the heart of all our technological research projects. We are using our
engineering expertise to develop the seat of the future using innovative technologies not seen
before in the automotive industry to help tackle an issue that affects people across the globe.”
