Hyundai officially unveils the new gen i20 before Geneva preview
Hyundai Motor’s new i20 comes equipped with ambitious and revolutionary design which is based on the brand’s Sensuous Sportiness design language. The car consists of state-of-the-art connectivity features along with a classy safety package. This model sets a new standard for the B-segment car.
The i20 was a great success when it was first launched in 2008. The model was marked for its reliability, quality, and durability. Not only that, the model introduced a completely fresh dynamic style. The new model will be manufactured at the brand’s European plant at Izmit, Turkey. The global debut will be at the Geneva Motor Show, 2020.
The interior of the model comes with a range of enhanced technological modifications. It has two 10.25” screens, a navigation touchscreen combined with the dashboard, and the Hyundai SmartSense Safety package. This package is the best within the segment. Alongside, it has the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist which can detect pedestrians and cyclists with much better assurance. Finally, the model has the Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC).
The safety package of the system protects at a low speed as well. The Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LDVA) notified the driver when the vehicle in front moves in case the driver’s reaction is delayed. Next, the Rear Cross-traffic Collision Assist (RCCA) warns the driver in case of any possibility of collision while reversing while the Parking Collision Avoidance Assist (Reverse) brakes automatically if it senses a collision risk. Finally, the model has Parking Assist technology as well which helps the driver park through tight spaces with the help of various sensors and softwares. Not only that, the model has Driver Attention Warning, High Beam Assist, and Lane Keep Assist.
The model is equipped with an e-Call system which can be used to contact emergency services at the touch of a button. This system automatically gets activated if the airbags are deployed.
The infotainment system is able to support both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The model has a wireless charging pad along with USB charging ports for rear seat passengers. The model is fitted with the premium Bose audio system with eight speakers and a subwoofer. All of these are strategically placed for an improved high quality sound experience.
The model comes equipped with Hyundai BlueLink technology which offers features like connected car services like Hyundai Live and remote services via the BlueLink Smartphone app. The Hyundai Live offers: real time traffic information, speed cameras, parking stations, voice recognition, parking spaces, and weather updates.
The BlueLink app offers: remote locking, sending search results of local POIs to the navigation system, alarm notification, and maintenance alerts. The new design language is characterised by style, technology, architecture, and proportion. The purpose is to create an emotional value which gives all Hyundai models their new look.
The exterior of the new model comes with a roof lowered by 24mm. The body has been increased by 30mm and the length by 5mm. The wheel base has been increased by 10mm with brand new 17” alloy based wheels. The model has fresh rear and front bumpers with new radiator grilles. The side view of the model provides an energetic proportion with a wedge style enhanced by the C-pillar design and bold character line. Furthermore, the unique lighting connects the rear and sides and puts emphasis on the wide stance of the new i20. It provides a premium feeling to the one driving the vehicle.
The model is being offered to customers in ten colours: Aurora Grey, Intense Blue, Sleek Silver, Polar White, Dragon Red, Phantom Black, Brass, Aqua Turquoise, Slate Blue, Tomato Red.
With the significant modifications made to the model, the customers can enjoy an array of aesthetic and technical comfort. The increase in the width has led to the car being able to provide more seating space for rear passengers.The cockpit gives an airy feeling while being appealing. The prominent dashboard is covered by horizontal blades. As a result the front fascia gets the unconventional sleek and wide look. The boot space in total offers 351 litres while a decreased belt line provides the driver with better visibility.
The doors of the model have been inspired by the shapes that are found in nature. It matches perfectly with the instrument panel section. The steering wheel is equipped with toggle switches and the accents match the exterior. The three trim color options for the model are: Black amino & Yellow Green, Black & Grey, Black Mono.
The model comes equipped with three types of transmissions along with two engine options.
The first option is the 1.0 T-GDi which is capable of providing a power of 100 – 120 PS. The 48 volt mild hybrid engine can be applied to this model with either the 100 PS or the standard 120 PS. This system can reduce emissions and fuel consumption by 3 to 4 percent. This system is equipped with a seven speed dual clutch transmission or the new six speed intelligent manual transmission. The manual transmission enables the model to go into coasting mode and save fuel after the driver releases the accelerator.
When the 48 volt system is not equipped, the engine comes with a seven speed dual clutch or a manual six speed gearbox. The MPi 4-cylinder 1.2 liter engine is available as well. This comes with a five speed manual transmission and provides a power of 84 PS.
Owing to the 4% weight reduction of the model giving it a competitive CO2 edge. This means the driver can achieve an economical level of driving without compromising the pleasure. Finally, features such as Go-Illustrate and Standard Idle-Stop helps in contributing to its environmental-friendly factor.
