Datsun launches the 2020 redi-GO facelift in India – Starts at Rs. 2.83 lakhs
At 2.83 lakhs, the redi-GO is the most affordable entry level vehicle available in the Indian market.
Datsun has launched the face lifted redi-GO at a smashing price of 2.83 lakhs (ex-showroom), and by pricing it at this point, it becomes the cheapest vehicle available for purchase in the Indian market (probably in the world too!). For those who just thought that the Tata Nano held this laurel, you would have been right, but unfortunately Tata discontinued the Nano in April, 2019.
The tiny sized vehicle has received updates on the outside, inside and under the hood as well. Armed with these updates it will be taking on the segment leader Maruti Alto and to trump a vehicle like an Alto, you need to get everything right. With this facelift, is the redi-GO ready (pun intended) to battle the Alto and Renault Kwid, let’s find out.
The new exteriors of the 2020 redi-GO
The facelifted redi-GO sports quite a different design, it comes across as bold but the body size of the vehicle really cannot live up to it. Still, it by no means does not look good, with the wide octagon shaped grill, new thinner headlights, L shaped DRLs (daytime running lights), redesigned front bumper, LED fog lamps and chrome accents on the grille make the front of the redi-GO quite striking.
The rear tail lamps also uses LED lights, the roof gets a spoiler and the 14 inch wheels use two tone wheel covers (only on the top spec), but keep in mind, these ‘two tone’ wheels are made to look like alloy wheels, but are not alloy wheels. Color options include Ruby Red, Bronze Grey, Crystal Silver and Opal White. Two new colors, Sandstone Brown VIvid Blue have also been added and in case you want metallic shades for the redi-GO, you would have to pay an additional Rs 3,000.
The new interiors of the 2020 redi-GO
The newest addition to the interior is that of the 8.0 inch touchscreen infotainment system which supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and this media system also displays the the rear while using the rear parking camera. The dashboard uses an all black theme, chrome inserts are used on the centre console, the seats make use of a new 2 tone fabric and there is also a new door trim and this together, gives a refreshing feel to the vehicle.
The powertrain and safety features of the 2020 redi-GO
The 2020 redi-GO gets a few mechanical changes as well, and this is in the form of a BS6 compliant 800 cc (this is a REALLY small car) producing a measly 54 ps/72 nm of torque and another BS6 compliant 1.0 petrol engine which makes 68 ps/91 nm of torque. Both these engines are coupled to a 5 speed manual as standard, and the 1.0 petrol engine has an optional 5 speed automatic transmission.
The conversion from BS4 to BS6 has resulted in dropping the fuel efficiency from that of the BS4 redi-GO. The 800 cc engine has a fuel efficiency of 20.71 kmpl (down by 1.99 kmp) and the 1.0 litre engine delivers 21.7 kmpl (down by 0.8). The 1.0 petrol automatic variant returns a fuel efficiency of 22 kmpl (down by 1 kmpl), so all in all these efficiency numbers are not bad in any way, it’s just interesting to note that the BS4 iteration of the redi-GO was more fuel efficient.
The safety features include 2 airbags, ABS (anti lock braking system), EBS (Electronic brake system), and rear parking sensors.
Prices of the 2020 redi-GO
The redi-GO is available in 6 different variants –
- D – 2.83 lakhs
- A – 3.58 lakhs
- T – 3.80 lakhs
- T(O) 800 cc – 4.16 lakhs
- T(O) 1.0 litre – 4.44 lakhs
- T(O) Smart Drive Auto – 4.77 lakhs
(all prices are INR ex-showroom)
The 2020 redi-GO is priced right on the buck, and it can surely garner a large proportion of sales. It has the looks, a decent engine and the right features for a car at this price point. Should the Maruti Alto be worried, guess we will find out.
