Kia revealed its EV6 preview images a couple of weeks back, and now we have more details on its upcoming electric offering. The South Korean carmaker has introduced the GT badging on the EV6, giving it some serious sports car level of power. The performance-oriented EV will come in two trims – GT and GT Line with two-wheel drive (2WD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) choices. The power option includes long-range (77.4 kWh) and standard-range (58.0 kWh) high-voltage battery packs.
Built on the E-GMP platform, the range-topping GT model features an all-wheel-drive powertrain. The 430kW dual motors draw the power from a 77.4kWh battery pack, making EV6 GT the fastest Kia to date. With a maximum torque of 740Nm, the GT accelerates from 0-to-100 km/h in an eye-watering 3.5 seconds (Well, lost in numbers, let me speak plainly, it’s faster than the Porsche Taycan 4S, yes). It can reach a top speed of 260 km/h. It features the exclusive electronic-Limited Slip Differential software, which Kia claims will let the drivers enjoy confident control along with a dynamic ride and handling in all conditions.
The GT looks a bit different from the other EV6s, thanks to larger wheels and tires and more aggressive front and rear fascias. The yellow brake callipers match the yellow accents found inside the cabin, and the seats look sporty and aggressively bolstered.
The GT-Line version of the EV6 looks visually the same as GT, but mechanically it shares its internals and power figures with the standard EV6. While EV6 GT features the long-range battery pack only, EV6 GT-Line is available with both long-range and standard-range battery packs. The 2WD 77.4 kWh GT-Line model can travel over 510 kms on a single charge on the WLTP combined cycle.
With a maximum 605 Nm torque available on the AWD version, the EV6 GT-Line can accelerate from 0-to-100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds. The 77.4 kWh battery pack is paired with a 168 kW (229ps) electric motor powering the rear wheels, and for AWD models a 239 kW (325 ps) electric motor powers the front and rear wheels.
The 58.0 kWh EV6 GT-Line can accelerate from 0-to-100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, with a maximum 605 Nm torque available on the AWD version. The 58.0 kWh battery pack is paired with a 125 kW electric motor powering the rear wheels, and for AWD models a 173 kW electric motor powers the front and rear wheels.
Coming to the juicing-up time of the battery, Kia has offered 800V and 400V charging capabilities on all the EV6 models. The cars are capable of a high-speed charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes. The 2WD models with the 77.4-kWh battery can also do a top-up charge of 100km of driving range in less than 4.5 minutes.
Kia has introduced a suite of technologies in its EV6 models to enhance safety, connectivity and infotainment. The EVs come with 12-inch dual screens high-tech infotainment system paired with a 14-speaker Meridian surround audio speaker setup. They also get an augmented reality head-up display, which shows ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) alerts, speed data and turn-by-turn navigation instructions onto the base of the windscreen in the driver’s line of sight. All the models come with Kia Connect for an easier and less stressful drive experience.
On the safety front, Kia has equipped the EV6s with its Advanced Driver Assistance system with remote smart parking assist. Additional safety features include lane following assist (LFA), Safe Exit Assist (SEA) and Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2). The online reservations have already begun for the EV6s in some markets. All models will be produced in South Korea and will go on sale in select global markets starting from the second half of 2021. India is one of the fastest emerging EV markets, but we will have to wait for the EV6 to make its debut here. Kia has plans to launch a total of 11 new EVs by 2026.
