Going forward with its plan to increase the sale of purely electric vehicles in Europe to 70% by 2030, Volkswagen has launched a performance-oriented version of its ID.4 EV crossover at Berlin Tempelhof Airport. The German automaker introduced the ID.4 last year and now it is the first EV from its stable to bear the GTX batch. However this isn’t the first time VW is giving its car a GTX treatment, sporty versions of Golf, Jetta, and Scirocco had the markings on them in some markets.
The ID.4 GTX will be launched in Europe in summer 2021. In Germany, it will start at an entry-level price of 50,415 euros, with customers being able to apply for a (net) grant of 7,500 euros. The EV shares the same design as the standard ID.4 but now gets a noticeable performance boost and packs some difference on the mechanical front. Let’s take a look on those changes –
• The ID.4 GTX is the first model based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) to come with dual-motors
• Both the motors sit on two different axles, one on the front other on the rear.
• The power sources have a combined maximum electrical output of 220 kW (299 hp).
• It comes with an all-wheel drive (AWD) capability, a segment-first feature in the ID class.
• The flagship model of the ID.4 product line is capable of a sprint of 0 to 60 km/h in 3.2 seconds and from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds.
• The EV’s top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h.
• The ID.4 GTX has an improved torque output and better handling, claims a company member of the Board of Management for Development, Thomas Ulbrich.
• The EV packs in a unique augmented reality head-up display and comprehensive assist systems.
• It comes with an intelligent operating and safety concept to compliment the drive train. 
• The robust and sporty stance of the vehicle sports the familiar light strip and the three honeycomb elements forming the daytime running lights, which establishes a connection to the Golf GTI03.
• It gets newly designed bumpers, while the rear 3D LED tail light cluster forms an X together with the brake lights that and looks quite eye-catchy.
• The body colour looks more dominant than the standard models.
• The roof and rear spoiler now gets a black treatment, while the roof frame bar shines in a high-gloss anthracite paint scheme.
• On the inside the EV now also boasts a new colour scheme. The upper section of the dashboard and leatherette inserts in the doors come in the dark shade of X-Blue. It comes with contrasting red seams adding accents to the seats.
• The steering wheel has a GTX logo along with the perforated sill panel trims at the top of the front seat backrests.
Volkswagen shared its aims to become the most coveted sustainable mobility brand with an intention to become climate-neutral by 2050. The German brand also disclosed at the launch event that by 2025, Volkswagen will be investing around 16 billion euros in electric mobility, hybridisation and digitalisation. Just to remind you VW has plans to introduce 20 EVs through 2025.
