Mercedes launches the 2021 GLA and AMG GLA 35 in India

The entry level SUVs were supposed to go on sale in April only, but the launch had been delayed to the end of May due to the disruption caused by the pandemic.

Mercedes-Benz has finally launched the new-generation GLA range in India. The lineup includes both the standard GLA, as well as the performance-spec AMG GLA 35 models, which are priced between ₹ 42.10 lakh and ₹ 57.30 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The company has also said that these are introductory prices and the GLA range will see an upward revision of up to ₹ 1.5 lakh from July 1, 2021. The GLA’s were earlier scheduled for a launch in April but had been delayed to the end of May, thanks to the resurge in COVID-19.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLA will be available across India in accordance with local economic activities and adhering to all local guidelines. The German automaker is also offering both these SUVs at the company’s online store. Mercedes had already begun accepting bookings for the new GLAs in India last month.

The AMG GLA 35 4Matic is the third locally assembled AMG model from the company after the AMG GLC 43 Coupe, and the AMG A 35 sedan. Both the AMG and the regular version of the new-gen Mercedes-Benz GLA come to India via the CKD (Completely Knocked-Down) route. The standard GLA comes in three variants – GLA 200 (₹ 42.10 lakh), GLA 220d (₹ 43.7 lakh), and GLA 220d 4Matic (₹ 46.7 lakhs). The former two are offered in Progressive Line trim and the 220d 4matic in AMG-Line trim. As for the AMG GLA 35, it is priced at ₹ 57.30 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom, India).

In terms of design, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA looks a bit more butch now compared to its predecessor, thanks to the sculpted lines on the bonnet and sides. Like other models in the A-Class range, the top-end trim SUV will get the signature diamond-stud pattern grille with a chrome slat at the centre and the sweptback LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs. The rear section too gets all-new LED taillamps, sculpted boot lid, spoiler and a beefy bumper. As for the AMG GLA 35, it comes with the Panamericana grille with vertical chrome slats, and a more aggressive bumper and wider air intakes. While the GLA gets the option for either 18-inch or 19-inch alloy wheels, the AMG GLA 35 gets 19-inch alloy wheels as standard. The latter also gets Multibeam LED Headlamps.

On the inside, the SUV now comes with a new cabin featuring a large single unit display with split function for infotainment and instrumentation. The former gets touchscreen function and the MBUX infotainment system with a voice command function. Other features include wireless charging, multifunctional steering wheel, panoramic sunroof.

 

Besides the technical upgrades inside, the cabin of the new GLA will also feature new leather upholstery for the seats, along with an updated interior colour scheme. The AMG GLA 35 comes with an AMG-specific black interior, ergonomically contoured sport seats in DINAMICA microfibre with red stitching. The highlights of the AMG model also include a flat-bottom steering wheel, Burmester surround sound system, AMG Suspension, and Keyless Go Comport Package.

The 2021 Mercedes GLA will be offered with a ton of safety and convenience features like radar-based active braking assist, seven airbags, active bonnet for pedestrian safety, hill start assist, 64 colours of dimmable ambient lighting, dual-zone temperature control, multifunction steering wheel, wireless charging pad, a panoramic sunroof, USB-C ports, and electric-assist tailgate.

The new GLA offers both petrol and diesel engine options, both sourced from the A-Class Limousine. While the former is 1.3-litre petrol that makes 161 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque, the oil burner is a 2.0-litre engine that makes 188 bhp and 400 Nm of peak torque. The petrol unit is mated to a 7-speed DCT unit, while the diesel engine comes with an 8-speed G-tronic automatic torque converter unit. The AMG GLA 35 is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine tuned to make 302 bhp,and 400 Nm of peak torque, while mated to a 8-speed DCT automatic unit. It also gets Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel drive system.

The second-gen GLAs will go up against the BMW X1, Mini Countryman, Volvo XC40, and the upcoming gen of the Audi Q3.
