BMW almost ready to roll out the next-gen 2 Series!

BMW has confirmed four 2 Series models with either rear or four-wheel drive depending on the engine.

We won’t be exaggerating when we say the current-gen BMW 2 Series Coupe is one of the best driver’s cars produced in recent years. And with the automotive expertise the German automaker possesses, there’s only one way the second-gen 2 Series Coupe can go, UP!

The 2022 BMW 2 Series is in the final series of the development process and testing runs, with the production scheduled to begin in late summer 2021. The news is confirmed by the German automaker themselves along with sharing some camouflaged pictures and several other details about the upcoming premium compact two-door sports car.

Silencing the speculation games, BMW finally confirmed the incoming new-generation 2er will be predominantly rear-wheel drive. Introducing it as the spiritual successor of the iconic 2002 car, BMW is giving its most compact coupe more power in its latest avatar.

The new M240i will feature a 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline-six engine at it’s heart. It is capable of generating 382 horsepower, a 47 hp bump than the previous model and 17 hp more than the original M2. It will be mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Compared against the outgoing M2 Competition, the figure is 31bhp less.

We expect the 230i to continue with a turbo 2.0-liter inline-four with producing 250 hp paired with a six speed transmission. There no news about the convertible, so it can be assumed BMW will be skipping it this generation.

As per the released camouflaged photos, the prototype seems to avoid the big bulky kidney grilles as present on the 4-series coupe. On the rear end, there are modern-looking taillights. There are new shock absorbers that will make the car more comfortable. BMW also informed that torsional rigidity has been increased by around 12 percent compared to the current model, while stiffer support bearings on the front axle are claimed to improve feel and wider tracks improve agility.

On the inside one can expect a familiar cabin, covered with soft fabric and loaded with a ton load of features. The dashboard, instruments, central touch display, controls and trims could also retain the current design of the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

So far, BMW has confirmed four 2 Series models with either rear- or four-wheel drive depending on the engine. Included in the line-up is the 220i and 220d as well as the 230i and the M240i xDrive. A mid-range 225i is also planned for selected markets.

Talking about launch timeline, the rear-wheel-drive 230i will launch first alongside the xDrive all-wheel-drive version of the M240i. The xDrive and rear-wheel-drive versions of the 230i and M240i respectively will follow thereafter, with more details to be released as production gets underway.

Right now, BMW is busy prepping up its factory in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, where all new 2 Series Coupe models will be produced. Deliveries could begin in early 2022.
