Toyota is launching ‘Gazoo Racing’ in India through its virtual racing championship, the GR Supra GT Cup

The racing division of the Japanese has entered in a rather non conventional way

Although there is not much of a major market of tuning companies or performance-based mods in India, there has been some positive change. A lot of people bought Baleno RS even though its a little costlier and there a lot of Polo GT fanboys too.

Toyota also has their cute small racing division called the Gazoo Racing(a very unusual name) and it has finally entered the Indian market but in the most strange way possible.

Most of us are locked up inside our homes because of the pandemic and a very good way to pass time is playing video games. Toyota thought this through and announced the introduction of an India leg of its GR Supra GT Cup; a virtual racing championship based on the popular PlayStation 4 video game, Gran Turismo Sport. The introduction of this contest marks the India debut of Toyota’s GR moniker, and the company is set to expand the GR programme in India beyond the Supra GT Cup contest.

Naveen Soni, VP, Sales and Service of Toyota Kirloskar India said “Our intention is to have a Gazoo Racing experience corner at our dealerships – you don’t need to come to our showrooms just to buy a car. When customers come in for a service, a GR corner would help them curate and follow their hobbies while their cars are serviced”

Its been pretty long since Toyota actually conducted motorsports in India. They used to do the Etios Cup but because of poor response, wrapped up that division in 2013 and sadly they don’t plan to make a comeback soon. So all we can do for now is sit back and relax on our couch, and enjoy Gazoo on our televisions.
